Oversized permits increase the expense of transport. In the state of Iowa, fees may range from $50 to $300. 

If the maximum dimensions established by the state of Iowa for your shipment are exceeded, we will need to apply for oversized permits to transport your equipment.

Permits and Documentation
Your knowledgeable heavy-haul agent can apply for permits and submit paperwork for shipments that exceed the maximum allowable dimensions. Primary types of required permits:

Oversized permit. In Iowa, we must apply for your oversized transport permit. The route and travel days will be provided to the state, which will then determine whether we may continue. Typically, it takes between 5 and 7 days. 

Only when one of your load's dimensions — weight, height, width, or length — exceeds the maximum allowable is a permit required.

Planning and Routing
Your transportation agent will also schedule and route your oversized transport. When you call the state office to query about an oversized permit, they'll want to know where you're going and how much weight you plan to transport.

The weekends: Numerous states prohibit oversized shipments on weekends.
The holidays: Several states do not issue oversized permits for holiday travel.

The weather: Some states may invalidate your permit based on the weather.

Furthermore, oversized transports may be restricted to certain routes based on the limitations of the road system and the dimensions of the item being transported. Possible causes for denying your proposed route include:

Roads: Certain roadways cannot support the weight of your oversized load.
Bridges: A route with low bridges prohibits the shipment of oversized cargo.
Traffic: Due to traffic congestion, some states limit travel on certain roads.

Trailers and Accompanying Vehicles:
You must select the proper trailer to transport your oversized cargo. Typically, this is an RGN trailer, but RGNs appear in a variety of formats. Consult with your transport agent to determine which trailer type is required to transport your oversized cargo. Optional RGN trailers for oversized cargo include:

Hiring escort vehicles, if necessary, is the concluding logistical aspect of transporting an oversized load. Depending on the size of your cargo and your travel schedule, you may be required to employ support vehicles to accompany your load. Ask your transport agent if pilot cars, escort vehicles, or boom lifts are required to elevate wires along your route.
